White House Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions filed for a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
